| I have the great good fortune to be born a member of a large, inclusive family.
Because my parents were dedicated to both the pursuit of social justice (union
organizing, freedom from racial discrimination) and the weaving of personal
connections (many visitors, legendary New Year's Eve parties), I early found
that the best way to make good friends was to take part in making the world
work better. |

I have contributed a few family members myself. Raising my four children was a
glorious time. Childraising is one of the great adventures. One of them

| The most helpful friends are those who match very closely in some
areas (anchoring the connection), but are very different in other ways
(stretching our horizons). My living partner,
